Biogas and Solar Energy Project as an Alternative Source of Renewable Energy

Biogas and Solar Energy Project as an Alternative Source of Renewable Energy

The school is having an old kitchen which uses firewood as the main source of cooking energy. The reduction in fire wood consumption due to the use of the biogas plant means that the school can reduce this expense, hence investing in other school development activities.

This project was arrived at after the school Board discovered the school is spending a lot of money in purchasing firewood. The school buys four lorries of firewood per month translating to 20 tons of firewood which is equivalent to 40 mature trees per month and 400 mature trees per year.

This project aims at providing a practical solution to the fuel problem in Bethlehem Star School through installation of a biogas plant and solar panels within the institution to provide light and cooking energy.

BENEFITS OF THE PROJECT

  • The school will install biogas digester in the school to provide fuel for the school and also serve as a demonstration or pilot training projects for other schools in the region.
  • The other economic benefit that will be generated by this project will be reduction of uncontrolled forest cutting and thereby mitigating the risks of climate change.
  • Reduces environmental degradation eg. Deforestation
  • Bio- slurry which is rich in nitrogen nutrients improves soil fertility, thus increasing agricultural production.
  • Treatment of waste water for safe disposal, and or could be recycled for other beneficial use (achieved sanitation).
  • Provides a sanitary means for treatment of organic waste

In conclusion the intangible benefits for this project are many which we cannot put money value on it; such as promotion of conservation of natural resources by not cutting trees for fire wood and controlling pollution by proper waste disposal. These benefits are more rewarding because they give a human being the right to live in a fresh, clean, healthy, hazard free and beautiful environment.

BIOGAS AND SOLAR ENERGY is a long-term project, which we expect to take about 3 years, however our immediate need is to have a good kitchen which is more safe and healthier to our 5 cooks and Dining room for pupils.
